The SSL Certificate, Secure Sockets Layer for SSL, is the electronic certificate signed by an authority that makes a website reliable and authentic. It allows a secure connection to a web server through an internet browser. The SSL Certificate is associated with a domain name and allows users and visitors of a website to access it with confidence.
Hypertext Transfer Protocol, HTTP, is the application layer protocol allowing communication between a web browser and a website; HTTPS, where S stands for Secure, is the encrypted part used for secure communication over the Internet with SSL. Without this S in the protocol, you may encounter warning messages from the web browser indicating that the site you are trying to access is not secure, et cetera.

The level of assurance a certificate provides depends on its type and goes hand in hand with the type of site you are dealing with. Certificates come in three levels: Domain Validation, DV; Organization Validation, OV; and Extended Validation, EV. Each of these certificates requires specific information and documentation. For example, if you have a site that does not collect personal data, you may need a DV certificate, otherwise, you should aim for an OV or EV certificate.
